Tips For Keeping Your Vinyl Siding Looking Just Like New

There is a lot that goes into taking care of your vinyl siding!

In the late 1950s and early 60s, vinyl siding made its debut in American homes, in an era when aluminum siding reigned supreme. The earliest vinyl gained a bad reputation; the inferior materials of the day tended to crack and sag. But today’s high-tech plastic and vinyl materials combined with modern manufacturing techniques have turned vinyl siding into an exceptionally versatile and high-performing choice for cladding. In fact, it’s now chosen for over 32 percent of all new home construction, a trend that is only increasing over time. With this being said, it’s important to know how to keep that vinyl looking fresh and new.

Keeping It Clean

Even though vinyl siding is a low maintenance material, it still needs cleaning from time to time to remove dirt and grime. In humid climates, vinyl siding may also develop mold or mildew, which should be removed as well. Hosing down vinyl siding with a garden hose equipped with a spray nozzle or a pressure washer set on a medium spray pattern is often enough to remove dirt and grime. You can also use bleach to treat mold and mildew on the vinyl siding by adding one quart of household bleach to each gallon of your cleaning solution. Use a pump-up sprayer to wet the siding down with the diluted bleach/cleaning solution, working from bottom to top, then allow the bleach solution to remain on the siding for 10 minutes or so. Scrub the siding from bottom to top with a long-handled, soft bristle brush. Then finally rinse the bleach solution off the siding from top to bottom with a garden hose.

Benefits Of Vinyl Sliding

When it comes to siding, vinyl is about as low maintenance as it gets. Since it resists pests such as termites and blights such as rot, it will keep its original qualities for many years, giving you your money’s worth. Also, you’ll never need to paint your home, as a simple cleaning once a year or so is more than adequate to maintain its original good looks. Once your vinyl siding is installed, you won’t have to tax your budget with unexpected costs to keep it looking great.
