3 Tips To Prepare Your Asphalt Roof For Winter

Learn how to prepare your roof for winter.

Winter is getting closer and closer, so it is time to prepare your roof to survive the potentially harsh conditions of winter.  It is critical that you go through the proper measures to inspect and protect your asphalt roof.  The last thing you want is heavy snow or ice damaging your roof leaving you with costly repairs.  Luckily, there a few simple ways to prepare your roof that it continues to serve its purpose throughout the rest of the year.

Inspect and Clean

It is critical that you inspect and clean your roof now before winter gets here making conditions too dangerous to get to your roof.  Make sure to sweep all leaves and other debris off your roof so that it completely clear.  Check if there is any damage to your asphalt shingles or any other parts of your roof.  If you have experience with roofs, you should be able to make minor repairs and fixes.  Contact the professionals at High Performance Homes to repair any aspect of your roof.

Check Your Attic

Once you clean the outside of your roof, you need to move on to the inside of your home and check your attic.  You need to see if your attic is ventilated and insulated properly so that moisture and winter elements do not damage your home.  Make sure your attic is ventilated well so that snow does not melt and refreeze causing serious damage.  A well-insulated attic keeps the area cold and the rest of your home warm.  If your attic is well-ventilated, it could potentially lower your energy bill.

Look Out For Ice Dams

One of the worst things that could happen to your roof is ice dams forming in your gutter leaving you with costly repairs.  It is critical that our check insulation because weak insulation can cause snow on the roof to melt which runs into your gutters and then freezes.  Make sure to clear snow from your roof with a broom during the winter.
