3 Simple Ways To Protect Your Home From Storm Damage

Learn how to prevent storms from damaging your home.

We are in the middle of fall, which means an increase of rain and snow will be coming are way in the next few months.  As a homeowner, you want to ensure that your home can stand up well to all of the elements. Right now is the perfect time to go around the exterior of your home and inspect each feature.  Luckily, there are a few simple ways to protect your home from becoming victim to storm damage.

Clear Your Gutters

One of the most important tasks you should be completing this fall is clearing out your gutters.  Autumn is known for leaves changing colors and falling from trees, which can end up in your gutters.  The last thing you want is for your leaves and debris to clog your gutters causing water to overflow during a storm.  This can lead to water seeping on to your siding and foundation causing water damage. So, make sure you are scooping out the leaves and debris in your gutters this fall.  You also need to ensure that your downspout is directing water at least five feet from your home’s foundation.

Trim Your Trees

When it comes to protecting your home from the elements, you need to trim your tree branches.  You want to trim any weak or dead branches that are near or hanging over your home. The last thing you want is for a branches to break off on your deck or home and cause serious damage.  So, take out the loppers from your garage or shed and start cutting off some branches!

Check Your Doors and Windows

It is important that you check your windows and doors this fall to ensure that they are properly sealed.  You want to avoid water from seeping into your home through your doors and windows. You might have to install more caulking or weather stripping around each feature.  Depending on the quality of your windows, it might be time to upgrade to a vinyl frame, which stands up very well to all of the elements.
